Ucluth Fisheries Completes Fisheries Enhancement Work on the Nahmint River

Ucluth Fisheries in partnership with the Nahmint Enhancement Team (NET) recently completed work in the lower Nahmint river which created over 600 square meters of new fisheries habitat which is critical for rearing outgoing chinook smolts. The project also created improved access for DFO enhancement crews to collect broodstock from natural holding areas on the river. The project was managed by Ucluth Fisheries and supported by funding from the Pacific Salmon Foundation, Pacific Salmon Commission, Living Rivers Foundation and in kind support from DFO. Ucluth Fisheries Resource officer Tad Williams claims, " The creation of this addiitonal rearing and holding habitat is crucial to the survival and rebuilding of the endangered world famous Nahmint Chinook stocks". The Nahmint River is also the location of a sizeable area of Treaty Settlement Lands for the YFN. YFN elected Councillor Eugene Touchie recollects, " I remember fishing the Nahmint in the early 1950s with my grandfather in our cedar canoe and meeting Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and John Wayne who had flown in specifcally to sport fish the mighty Nahmint Chinook".
